    Ionizing/Non-ionizing Radiation (EMF/ ELF)

Radiation is the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or through a material medium. It is often categorized as either ionizing or non-ionizing depending on the energy of the radiated particles. Ionizing radiation carries more than 10 electron-volts (eV) which is enough to ionize atoms and molecules, and break chemical bonds.

A common source of ionizing radiation is radioactive materials that emit α, β, or γ radiation, consisting of helium nuclei, electrons or positrons, and photons, respectively. Other sources include X-rays from industrial and medical radiography.

Non-ionizing radiation can be found in the following forms:

    • Ultraviolet A (UV-A)
    • Visible light (laser radiation)
    • Infrared (IR-A, B, and C)
    • Microwave (MW)
    • Radio-frequency radiation (RF)
    • Low-frequency RF
    • Static field (magnetic)

The increasing number of non-ionizing and ionizing radiation sources in the work place are becoming an increasing concern in a wide range of industrial occupational settings. If not properly controlled non-ionizing and ionizing radiation can pose a significant health risk to workers. ACC can support companies in identifying and evaluating potential ionizing and ionizing radiation exposures, as well as developing proper control methods and work practices.

    ACC Radiation Services include:

    • Radiation exposure assessments for both operator and facility/process.
    • Development of regulatory-compliant Radiation Control Programs
    • Auditing/evaluation of radiation programs and work practices
    • Radiation Training Programs developed and presented.
